Etiology

  • Protein S deficiency
  • Protein C deficiency
  • Anti-Thombin 3 (AT3) deficiency
  • Factor 5 leiden resistance
  • Prothrombin mutation
  • Anti-phospholipid antibodies

Symptoms

  • Can be difficult to know when to test or implicate biochemical thrombophilia
  • Consider if: DVT occurs w/weak or no provoking RFs, young age (<50), strong family hx (first degree relatives), clots in unusual places (mesenteric or cerebral veins)
  • Anti-phospholipid antibody provokes both arterial and venous clots)
  • Only test if it would change management
