Etiology

  • Occurs secondary to an underlying problem - DM, vasculitis (e.g. PAN), RA, sarcoid, other

Symptoms

  • Abrupt onset
  • Asymmetric
  • Affects at least 2 distinct, non-continuous peripheral nerves, either simultaneous or serially
  • Motor and sensory symptoms

Physical Exam Findings

  • Peripheral nerve dysfunction affecting 2 or more non-contiguous nerves (e.g. peroneal and radial nerve)
  • Can cause both motor (weakness) and sensory (pain/numbness) symptoms
