Hansen's Disease (Leprosy)

Etiology

  • Mycobacterium Leprae
  • Spread via resp droplets

Risk Factors

  • Southeast Asia, Asia, Africa, South America

Symptoms

  • Weakness
  • Anesthetic macule
  • Area of involvement spreads
  • Direct nerve involvement
  • Neuropathic pain and enlargement of involved nerve
  • Nasal deformity, stuffiness, nose bleeds
  • Skin ulcers on feet as can't feel injuries
  • Asymmetric, upper or lower extremities

Physical Exam Findings

  • Weakness
  • Anesthetic, hypo pigmented macule
  • Enlargement of involved nerve
  • Nasal deformity & stuffiness
  • Painless skin ulcers
