- Viral inflammatory process
- Severe vertigo without hearing loss (involves only vestibular branch of CN8)
- URI sx prior, then abrupt onset disabling vertigo, N, V, gait problems
- Self limited → lasts a few days
- External canal and TM should be normal (assuming no co-existing conductive loss)
- Severe dizziness w/any movement, unstable gait
