Cervical Myelopathy

Etiology

  • Congential or acquired process (disc herniation, oa/degenerative changes, RA, trauma, tumor) that narrows cervical canal, compressing cord

Symptoms

  • Usually slowly progressive (unless trauma/infection/bleeding)
  • Difficulty with balance
  • Upper>lower extremity weakness
  • Loss of dexterity
  • Numbness and sometimes neuroapthic pain
  • Sometimes neck pain

Physical Exam Findings

  • Wide based gait
  • Spasticity
  • Hyper-reflexia
  • Upper and lower extremity weakness
