- W/staph, often dont find primary infxn
- Strep assoc w/primary skin infection or other often necrotizing site
- Toxin mediated, related to staph or strep
- First noted w/hyperabsorbent tampons
- Staph linked to menstruation, postpartum, surgical sites, pneumonia, sinusitis, super-infected skin lesions, other
- Staph linked to menstruation, postpartum, surgical sites, pneumonia, sinusitis, super-infected skin lesions, other
- Strep assoc w/primary skin infection or other often necrotizing site
- Severe illness w/fever, hypotension, confusion, target organ dysfxn (e.g. kidney, liver etc.)
- Ill appearing, abnormal vitals
- Rapid deterioration
- Often skin primary site identifiable if strep
- Sometimes diffuse, erythematous macular rash
- Desquamation 1-2w after onset
