Etiology

  • 80% are secondary to medication allergy

Risk Factors

  • Can occur in anyone, but HIV+ w/sig increased risk

Symptoms

  • Part of a spectrum that starts w/erythema multiform and ends w/TEN
  • Acute, painful, blistering erruption that affects skin and mucous membranes
  • Fever, sore throat, dysphagia, dysuria, feeling generally ill
  • Spectrum d/o, where SJS mild (< 10% body surface area)→ TEN severe (>30% body surface area
  • TEN associated w/systemic effects→ low bp, confusion, target organ dysfxn
  • Onset 4-21d after receiving inciting med

Physical Exam Findings

  • Painful, erythematous patches to bullae and epidermo-necrosis
  • Affects eyes and mucosal surfaces
