Typical Obesity

Etiology

  • Excess calories
  • Relative inactivity
  • Superimposed on native metabolic rate
  • Genetic predispositions
  • Secondary causes uncommon: endocrine→ cushings; congenital→ Prader-Willi

Symptoms

  • Sob/doe from deconditioning
  • Chest pain, shortness of breath from cardiovascular disease
  • SOB from obesity induced restrictive lung disease
  • Fatigue from sleep apnea
  • Joint pain from osteoarthritis

Physical Exam Findings

  • BMI > 30
  • Hypertension
  • OSA risk increased w/neck circumference >17inches men, >16inches women
  • OSA risk increased if can't see back of throat
  • Abdominal obesity and excess fat elsewhere
