Etiology

  • Isolated parathyroid adenoma (80-85%)
  • 4 gland parathyroid hyperplasia (10-15%)
  • Very rarely hyperparathyroid cancer

Risk Factors

  • MEN1 (rare): hyperparathyroidism, pancreas (gastrin, VIP, insulin) and pituitary (GH, Prolactin) producing tumors
  • MEN2 (rare): medullary thyroid cancer, hyperparathyroidism and pheochromocytoma

Symptoms

  • Usually slowly progressive and most are asymptomatic (identified by lab testing, w/mildl elevations)
  • Associated with fractures, renal stones, fatigue, confusion, weakness
  • Higher risks with higher ca2+
