Etiology

  • Toxin produced by anaerobic gram positive rod
  • Antibiotic associated colitis

Risk Factors

  • Can occur after any abx, though most notorious is clindamycin or broad spectrum agents
  • Also passed to patients in hospital via healthcare workers
  • Prior history of c dif

Symptoms

  • Cramps
  • Diarrhea, typically > 2x/day
  • Severe pain and sepsis if advanced
  • Sometimes blood in stool

Physical Exam Findings

  • F
  • May have generalized abd pain
  • Sometimes distention
  • With severe disease--> toxic megacolon--> very ill
