Clostridium Botulinum (GPR)

Etiology

  • Toxin produced by anaerobic gram positive rod
  • Acquired via food (improperly canned), dirty wounds, black tar heroin infxn
  • Toxin inhibits ash release in NMJ--> flaccid paralysis

Symptoms

  • Incubation 1-2d
  • Dizziness
  • Dry mouth
  • Double vision
  • Blurred vision
  • Agitation
  • Resp failure
  • Death
  • Rapid descending symmetric paralysis starting w/cranial nerves
  • No sensory deficits
