Encephalitis| Bacterial

Etiology

  • Encephalitis is much more commonly viral than bacterial
  • Bacterial etiologies (same as for meningitis) include: strep, h flu, listeria, neisseria

Symptoms

  • Acute fever, stiff neck, head ache, nausea, vomiting, photophobia, seizures, focal neuro deficits
  • Bacterial encephalitis can occur along w/meningitis

Physical Exam Findings

  • Often ill appearing
  • Febrile, confused
  • Sometimes focal neurologic deficits (e.g. focal weakness, sensory impairment, other) based on site of inflammation
