Etiology

  • Non-Small Cell: 85-90% of lung cancer; Typically adenocarcinoma (40%), squamous cell (25-30%), and large cell (5-10%)
  • Small Cell: 10-15% of lung cancer

Risk Factors

  • Family hx
  • Most common RF is tobacco smoking
  • Other Rfs include asbestos exposure, environmental smoke, ionizing radiation, radon, marijuana/hookah
  • 25% of lung ca (typically adeno) occurs w/no smoking hx

Symptoms

  • Cough
  • Sob/doe
  • Chest pain
  • Hemoptysis
  • Hoarseness
  • Weight loss
  • F
  • Sweats
  • Other organs if mets at presentation→ brain, liver, spinal cord, etc.

Physical Exam Findings

  • May have auscultatory findings if involves enough parenchyma
  • Wheezing if affects large airway
  • Findings associated with effusion if advanced
