Etiology

  • Typically viral: coxsackie, influenza, adeno, cmv, ebv, hsv
  • Other infxns include: lyme, trypanosoma (Chagas), HIV, bacterial sepsis

Symptoms

  • Typically those of heart failure
  • Also F, C, S and anything else specific to underlying pathogen
  • Often co-existent pericarditis

Physical Exam Findings

  • Fever
  • Elevated jvp
  • Displaced PMI
  • + s3
  • Edema
  • Other findings assoc w/primary infxn
