Etiology

  • Alveolar bleeding assoc w/pulmonary capillaritis, diffuse alveolar damage (e.g with ARDS), or no inflammation (e.g. mitral stenosis/severe elevation LVEDP, use of anti-coagulants)
  • Capillaritis related to GPA, EPA, anti-glomerular basement ab, mpa, behcets, other connective tissue d/o, medications (can induce capillaritis) including: hydralazine, PTU, infliximab, other

Symptoms

  • May have known systemic inflam d/o or DAH can be first manifestation
  • Hemoptysis, SOB, DOE, F, CP
  • Often life threatening (clots form in airways, preventing air flow)

Physical Exam Findings

  • Abnormal Vital Signs
  • Rales/lung consolidation
  • Findings assoc w/primary systemic dz (e.g. scleroderma, RA, polymyositis, SLE, other) if underlying d/o contributing
