Etiology

  • Autoimmune
  • 15% w/triggering event (e.g meds, trauma, other)

Risk Factors

  • Age > 70.

Symptoms

  • Rarely painful
  • Pre-blister phase w/itching, plaques on trunk and extremities that can last for weeks
  • Then tense blisters (sub-epidermal splitting of skin)
  • Can affect mucous membranes

Physical Exam Findings

  • Tense blisters (sub-epidermal)
  • Can be large (several cm in diameter)
  • Often symmetric involving extremities, trunk
  • Up to 30% w/oral involvement
  • Erosions when blisters rupture
  • Oral mucosal erosions
