Etiology

  • Spinal canal narrowing--> compressing lumbar roots
  • The result of degenerative joint disease, osteophytes, ligametum flavum hypertrophy, combination of processes
  • Typically age related, but also congenital
  • Much less commonly: fracture, infection, cancer

Symptoms

  • Back pain that radiates down back of both legs
  • Worse w/walking, improves w/rest
  • Also better if walking while leaning forward (e.g. leaning on shopping cart)
  • Progresses over time

Physical Exam Findings

  • Exam may be unremarkable
  • If severe, limited mobility
  • Normal peripheral pulses a clue that not related to PAD
