Amenorrhea|Other Endocrine Causes

Etiology

  • Cortisol excess
  • Hyper or hypothyroidism
  • Androgen excess from tumor, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, consumption of exogenous androgens w/body building

Symptoms

  • Elevated cortisol: weakness, easy bruising
  • Androgen excess: increased strength, irritability/mood changes
  • Hypothyroidism: weakness, decreased energy, depression, constipation, cold intolerance
  • Hyperthyroidism: weakness, irritability, sleeping less, palpitations, diarrhea, heat intolerance

Physical Exam Findings

  • Androgen excess: male patterned balding, facial hair, acne, muscle bulk, clitormegaly
  • Cortisol excess: central weight gain, htn, striae, buffalo hump, moon face
  • Hypothyroidism: weight gain, bradycardia, edema, decreased reflexes, dry skin
  • Hyperthyroidism: weight loss, tachycardia, tremor, proptosis, lid lag, hyper-reflexia
