Etiology

  • Toxin mediated, w/primary staph infection often distant (e.g. nares)

Risk Factors

  • Typically in neonates and infants
  • Can occur in compromised adults and those w/chronic renal disease

Symptoms

  • Fever
  • Acute, painful, red skin
  • Then develop blisters and desquamation
  • High mortality in adults (not kids)

Physical Exam Findings

  • Red skin w/subsequent blisters and desquamation
  • Predilection for neck, groin and axilla
