Meniscal Injury

Etiology

  • Twisting or contact
  • Can occur concomitant w/ligament injury or as isolated problem
  • In older adults→ degenerative tears common

Symptoms

  • Acute/sub-acute pain
  • Swelling hours to days later→ slower accumulation blood
  • Chronic/recurrent sx of locking; instability/give-way, pain
  • Location of pain sometimes helpful in identifying site of meniscal injury; e.g. medial meniscus--> medial pain; lateral meniscus--> lateral pain

Physical Exam Findings

  • + McMurrays
  • + grind
  • + joint line pain
