Etiology

  • Chronic advanced liver disease for any reason can cause fatigue
  • Causes of chronic liver disease (resulting in cirrhosis) include): Alcohol induced, chronic hepatitis B, chronic hepatitis C, NASH, autoimmune hepatitis, other or combinations
  • All causes of cirrhosis can lead to portal hypertension and bleeding, with resultant anemia contributing to fatigue; can also have hypo-proliferative anemia

Physical Exam Findings

  • May have findings of chronic liver disease including: jaundice, icterus, ascites, edema, encephalopathy, muscle loss
