  • Known pregnancy
  • While can be premature, typically around 36+ weeks gestation

Symptoms

  • Waves of lower abdominal discomfort from contractions
  • Gush of liquid with rupture of amniotic sac
  • Time between contractions becomes shorter as delivery approaches
  • No menstrual periods in preceding ~9 mos

Physical Exam Findings

  • Large lower abdomen (potentially less obvious if very obese)
  • Gravid uterus palpable on abdominal exam, bi-manual exam
  • Cervical dilatation on speculum exam
