Nasopharyngeal Cancer

Etiology

  • A family of epithelial cancers affecting nasal mucosa, pharynx, and mouth
  • Keratinized squamous cell, non-keratinized, undifferentiated
  • Relatively uncommon in US, more common in Asia

Risk Factors

  • Family history
  • M > W
  • Past EBV infection
  • Smoking, ETOH, HPV

Symptoms

  • Nose bleeds
  • Neck adenopathy
  • Unilateral nasal obstruction, sinus area pain
  • Recurrent rhino-sinusitis, otitis media, ear fullness, decreased hearing
  • Non-healing ulcers/sores of nasopharynx

Physical Exam Findings

  • Neck adenopathy
  • Sometimes ulcer or mass visible on inspection oral cavity/posterior pharynx, nasal passageways
