Etiology

  • Collection of blood outside of arteries or veins

Risk Factors

  • Traumatic event
  • Patients taking anti-coagulants anti-platelet agents, or both

Symptoms

  • Swelling
  • Acute/sub-acute pain and swelling in affected area
  • Rate of accumulation (and symptoms) depends on location, size/amount of bleeding, arterial v venous

Physical Exam Findings

  • Pain and swelling over the affected area
  • Degree of findings will vary based on depth and size of hematoma
  • Sometimes echymosis or other evidence bleeding in the skin
  • Sometimes inflammatory findings in the overlying skin
