Etiology

  • A number of serious infections are known to cause intravascular hemolysis: malaria, babesiosis, clostridium perfringens
  • Many serious infections can cause DIC, though this is also accompanied by coagulopathy (i.e. elevated INR & PTT, low fibrinogen, low platelets) and schistocytes
