A number of serious infections are known to cause intravascular hemolysis: malaria, babesiosis, clostridium perfringens
Many serious infections can cause DIC, though this is also accompanied by coagulopathy (i.e. elevated INR & PTT, low fibrinogen, low platelets) and schistocytes
Tests
Elevated total and indirect bilirubin, elevated LDH, drop in hemoglobin, UA dip stick + for heme but no RBCs seen
