Risk Factors

  • Age 20-30
  • Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, or Asian background


  • Joint pain
  • Symptoms are typically episodic, waxing & waning over weeks to months
  • Painful ulcers in genital region and mouth
  • Painful, red eye; often w/decreased acuity (uveitis, retinal vasculitis)
  • DVT or arterial insufficiency (hypercoaguable)
  • Development of skin nodules
  • Abd pain, diarrhea, melena
  • CNS involvement: cerebral sinus thrombosis, stroke, parenchymal inflammation, seizures, cognitive impairment

Physical Exam Findings

  • Adenopathy
  • Painful oral and genital ulcers
  • Red eye, irregular pupil, hypopyon, decreased visual acuity
  • Inflammatory arthritis in one or few joints
  • Erythema nodosum
  • Pathergy--> papule/pustule in response to minor trauma
