Etiology

  • Impaired movement of eye due to hypertrophy of extra-occular muslces and orbital tissues.

Symptoms

  • Proptosis
  • Double vision
  • Dry eyes
  • Often other sx of increased thyroid: tachydardia, tremor, diarrhea, heat intolerance, etc

Physical Exam Findings

  • Bulging eyes
  • Lids appear retracted, w/more slcera visible than normal
  • Redness from corneal exposure
  • Impaired eye movements, w/inferior rectus affected mostly commonly; then superior and medial rectus; and lateral rectus last
