Etiology

  • Autoimmune
  • Affecting exocrine glands

Risk Factors

  • Women>>men
  • Age typically >50
  • Secondary Sjogrens: assoc w/RA, SLE, Scleroderma, other

Symptoms

  • Fatigue
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Limb pain
  • Dry eyes/gritty sensation
  • Dry mouth which can affect speaking/swallowing
  • Intermittent parotid region pain and swelling
  • Markedly increased risk lymphoma
  • SOB and DOE w/diffuse parenchymal lung disease (DPLD)
  • Sometimes multiple systems→ painful peripheral neuropathy, myalgias, arthralgias, arthritis, raynauds, cutaneous vasculitis, other

Physical Exam Findings

  • Dry mucous membranes
  • Enlarged parotid & sub-mandibular glands
  • Sometimes arthritis
  • Sometimes peripheral neuropathy
  • Sometimes adenopathy
  • Dry crackles w/DPLD
