Etiology

  • Autoimmune
  • Can also be para-neoplastic
  • Antibodies interrupt cellular adhesion in deeper layers of epidermis

Risk Factors

  • Age 50s-60s

Symptoms

  • Painful blisters, involving skin and mucous membranes
  • Most often mouth, but can be any mucous membrane→ GI (odynophagia/dysphagia)
  • Often unroof→ becoming ulcers
  • Persist over weeks/months

Physical Exam Findings

  • Flacid blisters (form within epidermis), which are easily broken
  • Most common mucosal surface is mouth, though can affect other mucosa
