  • Skin infection
  • Wound infection
  • Arthritis
  • Bacteremia
  • Abscess/purulence
  • Osteomyelitis via direct extension


  • Gram positive cocci
  • MRSA or MRSA, either of which can be acquired in the hospital or community

Risk Factors

  • Often skin break/compromise is portal of entry
  • Compromised host (e.g. diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, injection drug use, etc)


  • Fever
  • Pain/swelling at primary as well as lymph nodes that drain drain the region
  • Purulence favors staph, where as cellulitis alone suggests strep

Physical Exam Findings

  • Fever
  • Cellulitis→ redness, warmth, induration
  • Skin abscess→ focal redness, fluctuance, purulent drainage
