- Skin infection
- Wound infection
- Abscess/purulence
- Osteomyelitis via direct extension
- Gram positive cocci
- MRSA or MRSA, either of which can be acquired in the hospital or community
- Often skin break/compromise is portal of entry
- Compromised host (e.g. diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, injection drug use, etc)
- Pain/swelling at primary as well as lymph nodes that drain drain the region
- Purulence favors staph, where as cellulitis alone suggests strep
- Cellulitis→ redness, warmth, induration
- Skin abscess→ focal redness, fluctuance, purulent drainage
