Etiology

  • Uncommmon auto-immune d/o affecting cartilage

Symptoms

  • Subacute inflammation, most commonly affecting cartilage of the ear (can wax and wane)
  • Can also affect nose → stuffiness, epistaxis, d/c
  • Trachea → stridor/sob, cough, wheezing
  • Other locally affected organ-specific symptoms: eyes, joints, kidneys, other
  • Generalized: fever, fatgue, weight loss, joint pain

Physical Exam Findings

  • Stridor
  • Wheezing
  • Red eye
  • Saddle-nose deformity from cartilage collapse
  • Ear pain, redness and swelling (spares lobe)
  • Joint pain and swelling
  • Hearing loss (sensorineural)
  • Joint pain (usually multiple) pain and swelling (inflammatory arthritis)
