- Idiopathic smooth muscle contraction due to loss of inhibitory nerve input. Leads to non-peristaltic, simultaneous smooth muscle contractions
- Acute, intermittent central chest pain, often w/squeezing-type quality
- Often associated w/acute dysphagia to solids or liquids
- Pain can occur spontaneously or in response to swallowing
