Pneumonia| Post-obstructive

Etiology

  • Pneumonia that occurs behind mass→ cancer or aspirated foreign body

Risk Factors

  • Cancer
  • Aspirated foreign body
  • Conditions that lead to aspiration: neurologic d/o affecting swallowing (stroke, Parkinsons, other), acutely altered mental status (over dose, drug abuse), chronically altered mental status (dementia, other cognitive impairment)

Symptoms

  • Often recurrent infection in same anatomic area, cough, f, sputum, sob
  • If cancer→ may have weight loss, hemoptyis
  • If aspirated foreign body→ hx altered consciousness, drug use, impaired swallowing
