Bronchiectasis

Etiology

  • Focal or diffuse lung damage from many causes creates dilated areas→ dont clear secretions well→ superimposed infxn→ acute/subacute sx
  • Organisms: pseudomonas, strep, h flu, MAC, MTB, aspergillus, other

Risk Factors

  • COPD
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Known bronchiectasis
  • Prior lung infxn

Symptoms

  • Chronic cough and sputum
  • W/infxn→ fever, increased cough, purulent sputum, SOB, hemoptysis
  • Tends to be recurrent
  • Can take a long time to resolve
