Etiology

  • Myopathy
  • ALS
  • Other
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Phrenic nerve injury/dysfunction

Symptoms

  • Progressive
  • Double vision
  • SOB when affects diaphragm and intercostals
  • Generalized weakness
  • Often worse w/repetitive use

Physical Exam Findings

  • Muscle wasting in general (easiest seen in hands, feet, legs)
  • Weakness of affected muscles
  • Diminished reflexes if PNS or muscles
  • Sometimes fasciculations
  • Might have sensory impairment
  • May have paradoxical movement of abdomen (abdominal wall moves in with inhalation)
