Etiology

  • Atherosclerosis

Risk Factors

  • Known atherosclerosis or risk factors (DM, smoking, HTN, hyperlipidemia, etc)
  • Much less commonly: Hypercoaguble state (in particular, anti-phospholipid antibody syndrome); Vasculitis: PAN, Behcets, Takayasu's Arteritis, HSP (IgA vasculitis)

Symptoms

  • Persistent/progressive generalized pain with eating (i.e. angina of the intestines)
  • Food avoidance and weight loss
  • With acute ischemia/infarct, pain is persistent/severe and patient typically very ill

Physical Exam Findings

  • Weight loss
  • Diminished peripheral pulses
  • Sometimes abdominal bruit
  • Abdominal exam often unremarkable
