SMA Syndrome - very rare condition where SMA compressed by duodenum - associated w/rapid weight loss, scoliosis surgery--> change in anatomic relationships
Risk Factors
Known atherosclerosis or risk factors (DM, smoking, HTN, hyperlipidemia, etc)
Much less commonly: Hypercoaguble state (in particular, anti-phospholipid antibody syndrome);
Vasculitis: PAN, Behcets, Takayasu's Arteritis, HSP (IgA vasculitis)
Symptoms
Persistent/progressive generalized pain with eating (i.e. angina of the intestines)
Food avoidance and weight loss
With acute ischemia/infarct, pain is persistent/severe and patient typically very ill
