Etiology

  • Ongoing ingestion of alcohol
  • Often superimposed on chronic liver disease (frequently known or occult underlying cirrhosis)

Symptoms

  • Acute RUQ pain
  • N
  • V
  • Encephalopathy
  • Rapid onset jaundice

Physical Exam Findings

  • Sometimes fever
  • RUQ pain
  • Jaundice
  • Icterus
  • Confusion
  • Muscle loss
  • Sometimes ascites
  • Often hepatomegaly, sometimes tender
