Etiology

  • Gall stones that get stuck in cystic duct, then spontaneously pops back into gall bladder

Risk Factors

  • Cholesterol stones: Female, age > 40, obesity, Native American
  • Bilibubin stones (uncommon) from processes that cause hemolysis (e.g. sickle cell disease)

Symptoms

  • Right upper quadrant pain
  • Can radiate to back, right shoulder
  • Often after meals
  • When present→ constant then abates spontaneously

Physical Exam Findings

  • Between episodes, no findings
  • During episode of colic, may have reproducible RUQ pain
