Etiology

  • Obstructing gall stone in common bile duct (typically originated in gall bladder)

Risk Factors

  • Cholesterol stones: Female, age > 40, obesity, Native American
  • Bilibubin stones (uncommon) from processes that cause hemolysis (e.g. sickle cell disease)

Symptoms

  • Can cause jaundice, chalky stools, dark urine - without other sx
  • May also cause biliary colic (e.g. pain in RUQ that comes after meals, then abates spontaneously)
  • Risk for cholangitis

Physical Exam Findings

  • May be jaundiced
