Esophageal Cancer (Adenocarcinoma)

Etiology

  • Lower 1/3 of esophagus
  • Mechanically obstructs lumen
  • Can also cause pseudoachalsia, where tumor at gastro-esophageal junction infiltrates myenteric plexus, interfering w/motility

Risk Factors

  • Age > 50
  • Associated with GERD→ Barret's
  • Alcohol, smoking

Symptoms

  • Weight loss
  • Progressive dysphagia, solid > liquid
  • May need to vomit to relieve obstruction
  • Sometimes pain, hematemesis, melena
