Etiology

  • Canalith freely floating in semi-circular canal--> causing sensation of movement even when none occurring
  • Sometimes hx prior trauma

Symptoms

  • Abrupt onset vertigo
  • Worse w/any head movement→ roll over in bed, assoc n/v, episodes last 10-20 sec, no other neuro Sx
  • Usually remits spontaneously

Physical Exam Findings

  • Sx provoked by Dix-Hallpike maneuver
  • Associated rotational nystagmus toward affected side
  • Treated w/canalith repositioning
