Etiology

  • Uncommon tumor arising from connective tissues (e.g. bone, muscle, nerves, fat, blood vessels, joint structures, other)

Symptoms

  • Relatively uncommon malignancies
  • Growing mass that arises from connective tissues
  • Other symptoms based on growth into/interference with adjacent structures, metastases
  • May originate and/or grow into areas that aren't visible externally (e.g. retroperitoneum)

Physical Exam Findings

  • Mass arising from muscle or other soft tissue
  • Typically firm; sometimes painful
  • Often covered by normal appearing skin
  • Extra-anatomic (ie clearly not part of normal anatomy)
