Etiology

  • Most common adult acute leukemia

Risk Factors

  • Male
  • Age > 60
  • Smoking
  • Hx prior chemo or xrt
  • Hx of myelofibrosis
  • Essential thrombocythemia
  • Polycythemia vera

Symptoms

  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Dyspnea
  • Easy bruising
  • Can have stroke like sx or other target organ dysfxn from leukostasis associate w/very high WBC counts
  • APL (acute promyelocytic leukemia) sub-type can present w/DIC

Physical Exam Findings

  • Palor
  • Echymoses
  • Petechiae
  • Hepatomegaly
  • Splenomegaly
  • Musocal bleeding
  • Sometimes adenopathy
