- Thrombotic microangiopathy assoc w/hemolytic anemia, usually from exposure to shiga-toxin produced by ecoli 0157:H7
- Consumption causes thrombocytopenia
- Organ damage (e.g. AKI) from microvascular thrombosis
- Typically in children, though can occur in adults
- Abdominal pain
- Bloody diarrhea
- Often ill appearing
- Petechiae and mucosal hemorrhages
- Abdominal pain on palpation
- Anemia, thrombocytopenia, acute kidney injury (elevated creatinine), schistocytes on peripheral smear
- Elevated T bili, LDH, low haptoglobin
- Typically INR/PT, PTT, Fibrinogen and D-Dimer normal (unless another process is contributing)
