Etiology

  • Degenerative joint disease, trauma, idiopathic

Symptoms

  • Can sometimes cause popliteal fossa fullness and discomfort
  • More commonly asymptomatic
  • When rupture (usually painless) causes unilateral edema, which generates concern for DVT (presence of cyst usually not known prior)

Physical Exam Findings

  • Sense of fullness in fossa
  • Acute unilateral edema if cyst ruptures
