Etiology

  • Idiopathic smooth muscle contraction due to loss of inhibitory nerve input. Leads to non-peristaltic, simultaneous smooth muscle contractions

Symptoms

  • Acute, intermittent central chest pain, often w/squeezing-type quality
  • Often associated w/acute dysphagia to solids or liquids
  • Pain can occur spontaneously or in response to swallowing
