- Inflammation of diffuse or specifc areas of brain parenchyma
- 50% are of unknown etiology
- Of those w/known cause, 20-50% are viral
- Tend to have focal neuro deficits as compared w/meningitis
- Acute onset of headache, fever, confusion, irritability, motor and sensory impairment, altered speech
- Can also have meningoencephalitis
